Sorting through the week’s new singles and songs that have surfaced online over the last seven days, Jamie Skey (@jamie_skey) presents five songs you need to hear this week…

If you hadn’t fully clocked that autumn’s settled in, you will after hearing Icelandic producer Tonik Ensemble’s Until We Meet Again, a soulful, organic embodiment of the harvest season, rich with crystalline synths-drops and gauzy layers of wistful vocals.

Restraint isn’t a word you’d necessarily connect with the field of euphoric techno, but Barcelona-based producer Sau Poler demonstrates a rare economy and poise on his latest cut Non Plus Ultra. Ripped from his forthcoming EP Paradoxes of Progress, the tune looms from the blurred spaces of an early morning after party, cut with broken beats, churning bass and intricately woven dreamscapes. A continental cousin of Jon Hopkins’ music.

Brighton-based grunge-pop trio Tigercub stamp and snarl on their last single Centrefold, a blood thirsty call from the wild heralding another grunge revival, bristling with irresistible pop hooks.

Few artists have successfully made classical music palatable for a modern audience, but avant-garde trio Rubato are set to build bridges between perceived high-brow orchestrations and sophisticated electronic production. The foreboding Prelude With Attitude takes Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C Sharp and feeds it through an industrial grinder, with spine-chilling results.

Norway-by-way-of-Cardiff art folkies Firewoodisland sound like Bon Iver if only the woodland-dwelling guitar slinger had Celtic roots. Simon is a fanciful dance of uplifting, lush indie-folk that will rouse the soul during those darker, colder nights spent alone.
