Ahead of tonight’s (6 July) Wales vs Portugal game in the European Championships Welsh band Helen Love have released charity single A Boy From Wales Called Gareth Bale. In a guest column eponymous frontwoman Helen Love explains why the footballer has moved her band to song.
They say footballers are born, not made. But we’re not sure that’s true in the case of Gareth Bale. A heroic man who would be remember as a quasi-mythological figure had he been plying his trade in ancient times, his contemporary status renders him very real – and no doubt forged by the finest resources Wales has to offer…
With strength that could only have been hewn from the rugged nearby Twmbarlwm Mountains, and a passion that burns as bright as any fires that raged inside the Big Pits of Blaenavon, he nevertheless bears the compassionate and welcoming hallmarks that have proudly shone from the people of Wales since time immemorial.
And now, leading his proud legions of warriors with him, he’s two games from glorious immortality. Two games from completing the impossible and taking Wales to victory in a tournament they started as no hopers; also-rans and even worse… A patronising footnote to England’s ‘can’t fail’ group winning status. That turned out well, eh.
So we have written a song, not bloated by the coffers of the Welsh FA or crafted to appeal to the most banal of daytime radio. We’ve written a song from the heart, to sum up the nation’s feeling for Gareth Bale – the true Prince of Wales!
And now, with all proceeds going to help the Panini Cheapskates in their charitable mission, if you dream of Gareth’s dragons mounting the insurmountable and destroying miserable Cristiano Ronaldo and his beleaguered Portugal, putting Wales at the forefront of the world’s footballing map – pick up a copy of the song, share the video on twitter – and let’s see where the mighty Cymru can take us… Led by a boy from Wales called Gareth Bale!
