Having released their third album In Gold Blood in August, Cardiff rockers Kids In Glass Houses have a lot of touring ahead of them. On the road between now and the end of the year, the band’s guitarist Iain Mahanty has put together a selection of songs that are perfect to wake-up to. “Seeing as I’m always on tour, music is an important way for me to start the day,” he explains. “Here’s a few tunes I might be caught listening to in October, when we’re touring the UK.”

Elvis Presley – Hound Dog

“This is a new one to my ever growing list of tunes to wake up to. I pretty much jump straight out of my bunk and feel good, if this is what blasts out your alarm clock in the morning, you’re in for a good day.”

Oasis – Morning Glory

“The lyrics say it all really. Need a little to wake up, wake up, bit of a cliché but it’s a tune. It makes me feel awesome whenever I hear it. I can’t help but strut around the back lounge whilst slinging clothes on.”

John Williams – Jurassic Park Main Theme

“One of the greatest songs to wake up to in my opinion. You can time getting out of bed perfectly with the crescendo…. one leg at a time. Often, this song gets the whole crew singing, whistling and generally pumped.”

Prince – Starfish And Coffee

“The school bell at the start of the tune acts like an alarm. One of my favourite Prince tunes, it sounds like sunshine, always a good way to start your day.”

Small Faces – What’Cha Gonna Do About It

“Whenever I listen to Small Faces and I’m getting ready to go out, I can’t help but dress sharp. Surely the way you should try to start every day. Get straight out of bed, start dancing, and try to look good.”

Angel of Death – Slayer

Not one for if you’re waking up with a hangover, which can happen on the road. It definitely kicks the doors down. I love slayer and I, sometimes, love waking up to them pounding my fucking head in.”

Primal Scream – Movin’ On Up

“Uplifting, the lyric I was blind, now I can see surely has some relevance to waking up…. No? I love this band and this tune puts me in a great mood, the gospel vocals almost make it spiritual. Maybe tune for a day off?”

Band of Horses – Window Blues

“I love this band, I can listen to them any time of day. Waking up to them is a real treat when you have nothing to do. Just lay there and enjoy.”

Bruce Springsteen – Born In The USA

“The snare is a call to arms. We’re all big Springsteen fans, and we are known to get caught dancing to this track in the line for the shower. If this doesn’t set you up for the best day ever, then I don’t know what will.”

Huey Lewis and The News – Power of Love

“Go on, be Marty McFly for the day…”
