Vampire Weekend believe that a lot of people wrote them off when they first emerged – and are happy to be proving the doubters wrong.

The band were named Q Best Act In The World Today presented by Planet Rock at Monday’s Q Awards, and spoke backstage after at the ceremony.

“When we first came out a lot of people thought all we were was a college band, singing about college, dressing like college,” suggested frontman Ezra Koenig.

“So I think if you went to the Q Awards 2008 and you did a poll saying: ‘Are these cats going to the best act in the world in five years’ a lot of people would have said ‘Hell no! Fuck those guys, get them out of here!'”
